Phebe had several children from her first marriage and she and Cruth had a child, Alice, from their marriage. GRICE,
CUSHMAN

Thomas William Elson
twelson@rogers.com

I'm searching for any information relating to William Grice and his family of Gravenhurst. William Grice was my grandfather on my mother's side. He was born in 1877 and died in 1927. He is buried in a cemetery in Gravenhurst, but I don't know which one. He married Ida May Cushman, born in 1886 and died in 1940 and they had nine children. My mother, Lillian Beatrice Grice was the oldest, being born in 1907 and her youngest sibling, Albert Grice, who was born in 1925, is the last surviving member of that family. I never met my maternal grandparents but there was a photo in the centennial edition of the Gravenhurst newspaper showing the members of the 1912-1913 Gravenhurst Fire Department and my grandfather was a member of that brigade. After my grandfather Grice died, my grandmother married William Rutherford in 1932. My grandmother is buried in the Rutherford plot at the Otter Lake cemetery near Parry Sound.
I would really be pleased if anyone could shed some light on this family. The names of the siblings, all born with the surname Grice, were: Lillian, Gilbert, Irene, Helen, Viola, Rosina, Josephine, Hazel and Albert.

Thank you.

Grose (maiden) wife of Edward Meads

I am looking for information about my great grandmother. Her maiden name is Grose and she was married to Edward (Teddy) Meads. She was buried in a pioneer cemetary near Yearly outside of Rosseau Ontario. She died around Dec 25 1883. I visited the cemetray when I was very young and I think it was on a side road just off the orad to Huntsville. I have checked theregular cemetary sources but I cannot find any record of her. Any assistance you might have would be greatly appreciated.

Carol MacKay
brycemackay@shaw.ca

My HYDE family arrived in Stisted Township in 1872-3.Tragically, in December 1873, the mother, Mary Ann HYDE, drowned in a well.By 1879, her husband, Francis Herbert HYDE had returned to Toronto, possibly remarried to Louisa Ann Jones, although I have yet to find a marriage license for them.I would like to find a burial for Mary Ann HYDE, and possibly any information about what happened when she died.Their daughter, Agnes Mary HYDE stayed in Stisted and married John Sootheran HAGAN, and they raised a family on their farm.If anyone knows of descendants of Agnes and John, I would love to hear from them. Their children were: 1. Albert Charles HAGAN, married Ethel T. Thompson, children:Roy Wallace, Dora Minerva, Ida May(married to George Wesley), Albert F., and John, possibly more children.
2. Ruth Emily Hagan, married George Thomas BRADLEY, children: Ralph Stewart (married Violet Jane Good), and Maria, maybe more children.
3. Francis Ralph HAGAN
4. Agnes Mary HAGAN
5. Arthur Ronald HAGAN (married Mary Mann)
6. Frederick Clarence HAGAN

Another family line lived in the area as well. John and Sarah Ann KNAPMAN farmed in Rosseau, Parry Sound, from about the 1880s to 1905 when John died. Their daughter, Agnes Sarah Ann married Valentine Thomas DRAYCOTT, and they farmed and raised a family in the area, until Sarah died in 1903.
Their children were: 1. Thomas John DRAYCOTT (married Promise Jennie Donley Rankin)
2. Sarah Margaret Elizabeth(Sadie?) (married Thomas Russell NUTT)

John and Sarah Ann KNAPMAN also had another child who lived in the area in the late 1880s to sometime in the 1900s. He was Samuel Edward KNAPMAN, married to Christina BAIN, and their children were: 1. Grace Martha
2. William John
3. Olive
4. Clara
possibly more children.

If anyone has any information about these people and their descendants, I would appreciate them contacting me.Thank you very much.

Looking for information regarding the brothers Alfred England HUNT and Thomas England HUNT. Alfred HUNT (05 Apr 1859-13 Feb 1917) was married in England to Fanny SIMPSON (01 Aug 1860-1957) prior to coming to Canada. They arrived in Canada around 1879 and first settled in Brampton but moved to Bracebridge in the late 1880's. Thomas England HUNT (14 May 1865-28 Sep 1915) came to Canada around 1886 and was married to Mary Jane SITHES (20 Nov 1867-13 Mar 1938) in 1887. The brothers were both bricklayers as was their father John HUNT (Abt. 1832 - 6 May 1892). Their father died while visiting from England in 1892 and is buried in Bracebridge. Three other children of John HUNT and Mary TOOLEY came to Canada, Jesse, Harry and John George. The family came from Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, England.

The brothers and their families are living in Bracebridge in 1911.

Any information regarding this HUNT family and their descendants would be appreciated. I have been able to resolve

HUNTER,
STOVER,
BRUNSON

Penny Ganje-Barton
pganjbar@msn.com

I found this site from an internet search for CoopersFalls, Ontario. I am so grateful for the information I have found on this site. I located my paternal grandparents graves in the St George's Anglican Church Cemetery. I had only their names and that the family had lived in Cooper'sFalls and owned a wheat farm.

I found my grandmother first thanks to a nice gentleman from Canada who graciously looked up death regristrations for me. Her name was Phoebe Jane Stover b 12/13/1850 d 7/22/1923(error in the book and listing on cemetery page as Stoner born 1849 or maybe 1849 is right year and death registration is wrong, but it is my grams alright). On her death registration it listed her son as the informant, Clarence Hunter. He is also buried there as is his wife Elizabeth Brunson. Grandfather's name is Thomas Hunter and he is also buried in the cemetery.

I am interested to learn if there are folks in this area who may be related to this Hunter family or have knowledge of them. My father was Jesse Eugene Hunter b 7/31/1889, d 1966. He was supposedly born in New York but the family lived in Cooper'sFalls, Ontario. I have not found a birth record in Watertown, NY so I wonder if he was born there or in Canada.

Hopefully there is someone who can help me fill in the blanks. Family stories say there were 3 boys and 2 girls in this family, with my dad being the youngest. He was said to have older siblings and a sister who was already married when he was born.

I located other Hunters in the cemetery and wonder if they are also siblings to my dad. One Thomas E Hunter b 1871 and d 1956 could be a brother as older siblings said they thought one of the brothers was named Tom. This man was also married to a Brunson, Alice b 1886 and d 1971.
I also found a John L Hunter's name on Shirley McKenzie's grave and a child of their's. Mary Ann b 1941 , d 1945 in the Symington cemetery. Shirley died in 1954.

The girls names were thought maybe to be Phoebe and another rather unusual name. I found a Phoebe Jane Rogers, b 1874 and died 1952 in the same cemetery and wonder if she is dad's sister.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Dad had 11 children born between
1917 and 1940 so we are only 6 left and aging rapidly. Willing to share information on our family with any relatives.

Thanks muchly,
Penny (Hunter) Ganje-Barton

JOHNSON

Barbara
barbara24@Sympatico.ca

I am searching for my grandfather Frank C. Johnson who died in Parry Sound, on February 26, 1918 at the old General Hospital at the age of 39. He was taken to Logan's Funeral Home and they have a record of him being there in 1918, but the burial place had been left blank. His older sister Ester Johnson was the one who gave the information and she might have resided in Parry Sound at that time. I have check all cemeteries online through Murray Plesch website, but he is not listed with a stone. Somewhere there must be a record of him and where they might have buried him. Is there a Potter's field cemetery in Parry Sound as I do not think a stone was affordable at the time. Where would I look for such a record? He was born in Fesserton, Ontario on February 21, 1879 and his parents were James Johnson and Catherine (craddock) Johnson. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

I am inquiring about my father's family who settled in Monck Twp. My dad was Wilfred Bryson Clifford Johnston, born in 1922 in Monck Township. His father Wesley Johnston, no dob but date of death was 1938, and his mother was Jane Meeks, no dob and year of death was 1940. I do know that Jane was buried with her first husband, Herbert Meeks, place unknown, by whom she became a widow with 5 children. By the time Wesley Johnston married Jane Bell, he too had been married once before, before becoming a widower; this union produced 4 children. When Wesley and Jane married, this union produced 7 more children. My father grew up with brothers & sisters, half-brothers & half-sisters and step-brothers & sisters.
My father was also married to a woman named Alma Verna, last name unknown as well as her dob and dod. He enlisted in WWII, coming back to Canada and staying at the Gravenhurst hospital, where he met my mother, his soon to be second wife. Alma apparently divorced my father when he was overseas but I don't have a date either.
All I know is that I have a half-sister that is approximately 61 yrs old and I was raised in a family of 5 children. My parents were married in Kirkland Lake on February 10, 1949.
Could you help me out to find my father's family. I am stumped and don't have many leads as my father passed away at a young age of 56, on February 16, 1979

Sincerely

Denyse Johnston

LAHY,
LAHAIR / BALL

Lorraine LaHay
lahay@surenet.net

I have recently started the search for my husband's LaHay roots. In the past week I have found postings on rootsweb and on the LDS site. I have contacted people who have shared information and have very kindly given me names of others to contact. At this point my search has let me Barb Patterson.

My husband is Larry Donald LaHay (Don) b. 25 September 1958. His father is Larry Mervin LaHay b. 25 October 1936. His father was Archibald C. LaHay b. 27 June 1902. His father was Joseph LaHay b. 8 August 1860.

This Joseph LaHay was married to Margaret Jane Ball b.5 November 1870. Joseph had a sister Mary who was married to the brother of Margaret, a Lorenzo Ball.

Lorenzo and Mary had at least 10 children before the went their seperate ways and Lorenzo moved to the Novar area and started another family. I beleive his new spouse was Louise Beattie. This name is not at all confirmed.

I understand that Jackie Patterson found this information and left it with the Parry Sound Muskoka Genealogy Society to be used only when it was inquired about by a family member.

I would be most grateful to receive any information that you may have on the Ball/LaHay families.

I look forward to hearing from you.

SIncerely,
Lorraine LaHay
