Up untill very recently I only had a vague knowedge of my Muskoka ancestors. My Father (Deceased) used to talk about Huntsville and Stephenson. He also spoke of his school teacher "Aunt Mary" whom this title evidently annoyed. With the kind help and tireless efforts of many people in the Muskoka Parry Sound geneology group, I have been able to trace my ancestors in this region back to William Snell whom I understand was one of the early settlers. I have been able to locate the old homestead site where my Great Grandfather William Snell settled. I have been able to locate some of their final resting places. I have also been able to identify my fathers school teacher as possibly being "Mary Proudfoot" hence the name "Aunt Mary"

All the material that I have recently recieved has me overwhelmed and has given me a lump in the throat. I still cannot comprehend that for someone like myself who had almost no past in Ontario, I now can look back at many ancestors and actually visit the locations where they once resided.

Thank You from the bottom of my heart for all your hard work and efforts. Thank you for my past

I am researching the McCann family who moved to Bracebridge in 1900. Matthew J. McCann worked for the Anglo-Canada ("New") Tannery, befor joining the staff of the Muskoka Foundry. His son Austin also worked at the Foundry. I am looking for iformation on my father Matthew A. McCann who was a steam Engineer on boats in and around Bracebridge. I am looking for a book his name is in, published 195?. Are the any records of steam boats and there crew?

I happened upon your website trying to find the Townships of Muskoka.I was delighted to find your maps of Muskoka and Parry Sound Districts. Also appreciated reading some of your local history.
Congratulations on a great site !
I am researching a family who arrived in Muskoka Township about 1867/8. David SCOTT was born circa 1828 in New York State and lived in Whitchurch Twp. York Co. Ont. before he moved to Muskoka with his parents Aaron and Rhoda (Elliott) Scott. Other related surnames include Roach, Gohn, Baird, Goodman, Ouderkirk, Joyce and Burton.
It is not known for sure if Aaron and Jessie (Peterkin) Scott were closely related, but it seems very likely.
The David Scott family remained in Muskoka until about 1900, at which time they moved to Saskatchewan.
Would appreciate contact with anyone recognizing this family.

Is there not a search site, questions and answers on this site? I thought there was.
Also, there is a blog that is asking for information and pictures of Cardwell twp. but I can't find any contact.
Do you know of a genealogy site for the Muskoka area? thank you, Dorothy Partridge

Enjoyed reading the History of area. Many names on my husbands side of family. I have come accross a Samuel Armstrong in you writings. I'm wondering were I can find more on his family. I have a Samuel Armstrong and a Catherine listed as parents on my Gr. Gr. grandfather William Armstrong"s marriage information. I am looking for siblings and dates. I found a stone for a Samuel Armstrong who died in McKellar 10 Jul 1886, he was 70 years old, and am wondering if this is family I'm looking for.

Can you direct me as to were in area I might look.

Thank you so much.

I am a great-granddaughter of Moise (Moses) Poirier, who settled at Williamsport near Huntsville in 1884 with their sons John and Napoleon. I am also doing general research on the small communities of Williamsport and Yearly. This is a great site and you are to be congratulated for all the hard work that has gone into it!

I have been keeping a history on all the families of Draper/Ryde/Oakley/Muskoka and Morrison Townships for 7 years now. Would gladly share what I have on all families listed on 1881 Census. I have researched the town papers back to that time..This year I lost my complete Morrison file, unable to access it and stupidly didn't keep another back up..so anyone wishing to share their family history with me on their Morrison Township family relatives please contact me. Its going to be a while before I go through all my hard copy records and put them back into my files...Thanks, Carol Fraser, Draper Twp.

Found this most interesting site by doing a search for McKellar Loyal Orange Lodge #546. I enjoyed reading all the posts.

My ancestor John Ross (yes I know this is a very common name) born c.1824-1831, lived, married (Oct1873), raised family and died (1898)in area of Hagerman Parry Sound.

He became a member in this organization in June 1873 and until 1896 he still was a member. Was wondering if anyone who had ancestors who were also members would have old bits of paper work which may help me find him.
He was a painter and was in line to do some painting of the building.
There were also and William and Alex Ross who may or may not have been family. Alex moved to MB.

I have him and family on census back as far as 1881 for sure and a possible 1871 (alone) but from there cannot find him anywhere. Can't find on 1861 Census either.

Am trying to find out when he immigrated to Canada from Devonshire.
